It is clear that intuition plays an important role in elite performance in many human pursuits. In this work the authors demonstrate a framework for mathematicians to use machine learning that has led to mathematical insight across two distinct disciplines: one of the first connections between the algebraic and geometric structure of knots and a proposed resolution to a long-standing open conjecture in representation theory. Rather than use machine learning to directly generate conjectures, they focus on helping guide the highly tuned intuition of expert mathematicians, yielding results that are both interesting and deep.
