Defining iPhone Rules for Real-Time Events

The new iPhone’s app called Shortcuts allows you to create a script that can be activated by pressing a button or using Siri. For example, you may say “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over.” The shortcut will then pause your music, turn down the brightness, activate Do Not Disturb, and starts recording video via the front-facing camera. You can even send that video to a pre-designated contact.  Link

Rolando’s Tales from the Rule Trenches

Rolando Hernandez, a highly experienced business rules consultant,  shares his “True Tales from the Trenches.  Here is a monologue of the decision table from his first tale “A Rule is Born“: “If only someone had tested all the possible combinations of conditions. Dev or The Business would have detected my rule logic errors earlier in my life cycle, before I graduated to Production. And then I would have known exactly what to decide when real-life data was input to my decision service. If only… then I would have made the right sub-decisions and decisions and reached the right final conclusions every time, from day one.” Link

2019 Survey of Software for Linear Programming

Prof. Robert Fourer, who will be our presenter at DecisionCAMP-2019, just published the results of the 2019 Linear Programming (LP) Survey.  LP software can be very effectively used for Decision Optimization problems which deal with minimizing or maximizing business objectives subject to linear equalities and inequalities in numerical decision variables. The Future of DMN: an interactive discussion at DecisionCAMP-2019

Gary Hallmark, the author of DMN FEEL and a co-chair of the DMN standard committee, will run an interactive discussion “DMN 2.0?” at DecisionCAMP in September.  “In DMN’s 8 year lifespan from RFP to version 1.3, many features, changes and enhancements have been proposed and discussed. Some changes were rejected because they would not be backward compatible. Some enhancements were rejected as being out of scope (too big) or out of spirit (too different). In this presentation, I will briefly discuss some of the top ideas for a future version of DMN

Why Machine Learning Models Crash And Burn In Production

This is the title of the article published by Forbes: “One magical aspect of software is that it just keeps working. If you code a calculator app, it will still correctly add and multiply numbers a month, a year, or 10 years later. The fact that the marginal cost of software approaches zero has been a bedrock of the software industry’s business model since the 1980s.  This is no longer the case when you are deploying machine learning models. Making this faulty assumption is the most common mistake of companies taking their first AI products to market.Link Continue reading

CP-2019 Workshop on Progress Towards the Holy Grail

In 1997 in the paper “In Pursuit of the Holy Grail” Prof. Gene Freuder proposed that Constraint Programming was well-positioned to pursue the Holy Grail of computer science: the user simply states the problem and the computer solves it.  Twenty two year later on September 30, 2019, at CP 2019 at Stamford, CT, U.S., Gene Freuder will run  the workshop that will look at progress towards that goal. Real Time Decision Monitoring

The latest release of IBM ODM allows monitoring decision-making in real time. It includes a built-in Decisions dashboard of standard decision metrics such as decisions per second, the number of active rulesets, the number of times a rule or task is executed, and so on. You can also create custom views to get real-time insights about your decisions. For example, for a loan application you could look at the percentage of loan requests your system accepts, and the quality of those requests. Link
