Alain Chabrier and Alex Fleischer from IBM Decision Optimization team published the article “Decision Optimization: Speed is not enough” “Many tend to think that performance is the holy grail, and the choice of an optimization engine is mostly based on reviewing speed and performance. In practice, this means their engine selection process is reduced to taking the engine which is the fastest to reach and prove optimal solution, on average, on a given set of benchmarking models. This article aims at challenging this idea… While different engines may be twice faster to solve a given model, it is sometimes possible to be ten or hundred times faster with some improvements in the model itself. It’s time to deliver a model to the business user.” Link

Enhancing Process Management with Process Mining

Max Tay published this article: “Growing numbers of vendors rolling out process mining platforms and its adoption is growing steadily, transitioning from early adopters to becoming one of the latest trendy tools in the industries. It has come out of age and reaching maturity in term of the methods, specialized software functions and applications.” He also added: “The advancement in process mining methods also allow extraction of business rules applied during the execution of the process. In short the possibilities to elicit operational rules and decision models, which may be implicit to the subject matter experts.” Link

Decision Table Simplification

In response to our Sep-2020 Challenge, Dr. Bob Moore submitted a very interesting analysis of decision table compression/simplification approaches: “Understand what a decision table is for, before thinking about compressing it! There is a trade-off between compression and maintainability. We need to think about how it is likely to evolve over time. If we do not, we may find compressing it creates more problems than it solves.”

Walid Saba started an interesting discussion at LinkedIn: It is amazing how the commercialism and the misguided hype have invented AI topics that have nothing to do with AI, only because AI is now a hot commodity. So now you have talks and seminars and NGOs and non-profit orgs (that later secure big funding!!!) under labels such as “Democratizing AI”, “AI and the Environment”, “AI and human rights”, “AI and Ethics”, “AI and Fairness”, … Shouldn’t we have (some) AI before we discuss “AI and X”? Michael I. Jordan is a professor at Berkeley and one of the most influential people in machine learning, statistics, and artificial intelligence. Watch his recent presentation: “Much of the recent focus in machine learning has been on the pattern-recognition side of the field. I will focus instead on the decision-making side, where many fundamental challenges remain. Jason English, a Principal Analyst from Intellyx, wrote a whitepaper called “Event Mesh: Event-Driven Architecture for the Real Time Enterprise”:  “We live and work in an event-driven world. Tightly coupled integrations, and conventional data transfer and processing techniques won’t be able to keep up with the accelerating pace of events in the new economy. Customer demand and cost pressures on IT will require enterprises to change the way they think about integration and messaging. In your next design or change exercise, rather than calling for more point-to-point integrations – start finding ways to incorporate pub-sub calls that support an event-driven approach.” Link

GPT-3, the latest evolution in language technology – What is the big deal?
