Help a manufacturer decide, for each demanded product, how much to produce internally versus source from outside suppliers. Both options carry their own cost, and each unit made internally consumes a given amount of limited internal resource capacity. The goal is to minimize total production cost while meeting demand exactly, or within a given tolerance.
The manufacturer also wants to weigh production decisions against longer-term resource availability and uncertain future demand, rather than optimizing purely for the current period.
