This challenge asked BR&DM vendors and consultants to each submit a decision table representing a well-known “calculate vacation days” business rule — proposed by Prof. Jan Vanthienen (KU Leuven), a leading expert on decision tables and a member of the DMN Task Force. The underlying rule computes an employee’s annual vacation-day entitlement from inputs like age and years of service.
The point of the exercise wasn’t just to get a working answer, but to see how differently the same logic gets represented as a decision table across tools — nine vendors submitted 19 solutions in total. Prof. Vanthienen then compared all of the submissions and wrote up his analysis of what makes one decision table representation “better” than another for this rule.
